HEAVEN IS LIKE THAT Cm Fm G7 Heaven, it’s supposed to be very nice Cm Fm G7 All the mice have cheese and all the cats have mice Cm Fm G7 Angels feed you ice cream with a silver spoon F (STOP) And the radio plays everybody’s favorite tune In heaven, the sun it shines every day Or at least that’s what the people all say But no one ever sees it ‘cept the folk who almost die Still, I guess we’re all bound to find the truth after a while Cm9 Fm9 G7 Cm9 Fm9 G7 Hey, heaven is like that they say heaven is like that Heaven’s a place where the winds are mild And we all can sing, and we all can fly I don’t know how that works, or even if it do But if I find out that it does, well that’ll be quite cool Hey, heaven is like that They say heaven is like that Eb Bb But if there’s nothing after this, then there’s nothing to fear Cm7 AbMAJ7 And if they send me to hell, I hope at least that there’s cold beer Eb Bb Might find out that it’s a reincarnation effect EbDim G7 But what I really think, it’s something that we’ll never expect They say that in heaven there’s no more pain, No more hate, and that kindness reigns And you know me, how much I’d like to believe But is that how it is? Well, we shall see Hey, heaven is like that They say heaven is like that

OUTSIDE OVER THERE Sometimes I cling to the truth Sometimes I cling to the lies Sometimes I cling to the hope that I think I see in some stranger’s eyes Sometimes I think I’m slipping’ away And sometimes I just don’t care Cause there’s nothing to win in the Outside Over There I’ve looked for the day in the night I’ve looked for the good in the bad And I’ve caught myself scanning the crowd out For the faces of the children that I’ve never had There’s days that I get stupid And days that I get scared Cause it’s so damn dark in the Outside Over There People tell me they know the Truth And that the Truth will set me free Then I say “I’d love to have you set me straight I’d love to be able to believe” I look up into the starry night And I whisper out my prayers Cause it gets real cold in the Outside Over There When the time comes for me to step through that door And out into thin air I hope that I’m wrong about the Outside Over There Yeah, I hope that I’m wrong about the Outside Over There

QUARANTINE ROMANCE Here's Anna and here's Joe, and they're in lockdown now together It's not what they expected, but it's turned out for the better They've learned a lot of things they never knew when they were dating It seems this isolationship can make for deep relating Sometimes it's strange because they just can't ever be apart, But they wake up every morning with a song in both their hearts And love is so much easier when you're not wearing pants They're in a Quarantine Romance Bill and Ed are lovers, but they're stuck in separate homes They do the best they can now with their Zoom app and their phones They write each other letters like they never did before About their thoughts and hopes and dreams, and all those things and more They're closer now than ever, even though they're far apart For them there's nothing stronger than the bonding of their hearts They know it's really crazy that they have to do this dance They're in a Quarantine Romance Amelia's doin' fine now, 'cause she's OK with herself She doesn't much like people, but she loves her cat named Ralph And Ralph is really happy that she's home now all the time He looks up from her lap and tells her. "I"m so glad you're mine" It might not be in English, but she knows just what he means And this time is a special time for cats and human beings You know the world is splendid if you give it half a chance They're in a Quarantine Romance They're in a Quarantine Romance They're in a Quarantine Romance

MAYBE YOU'LL WIN The Colosseum is empty but for you A Gladiator with battle still to do The world has shifted, but you don't wanna know So much more that's goin' on, but you just can't let it go Our little grudge match was a stupid little game Although I admit back in the past I probably felt the same The fact that I've moved on is something you can't see Our disagreements, they're ancient history Maybe you're right, maybe you'll win You're waiting for the fight to begin But by the time you get your armor on Look for me, you see I'll be gone Out in the Philippines, in 1985 A Japanese soldier from World War II was found out there alive The endless years of hate and fear had eaten up his soul He didn't know that it was over long ago Maybe you're right, maybe you'll win You're waiting for the fight to begin But by the time you get your armor on Look for me, you see I'll be gone

THINGS ARE GONNA CHANGE I see the sun rising like an angel in the sky So many times I used to sit and wonder why So much time in darkness, and so much time alone Just another lost dog lookin’ for a home So many many others livin’ on the edge No one in control here to help them off the ledge So many gone before us, with tickets to the night I hear them sing the chorus and I see a little light Things are gonna change Things are gonna change Things are gonna change Things are gonna change for the better this time The writing on the wall written by the burning hand I’ll try my best to read it, and try to understand I know the wheels are turning, although they’re turning slow Outside a storm is rising, and everybody knows Things are gonna change Things are gonna change Things are gonna change Things are gonna change for the better this time

SINGING IN MY HEAD INTRO – D7/E (8 BARS) C C/B C/A They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger F G But this might kill me, this might do it C C/B C/A I don’t think I can take it too much longer F G But I have to, to get through it F I spend my days in isolation, G / Am Am/G / Trapped behind these shining walls of bone Am/F I’m all alone F G Sometimes I really wish that I were someone else instead F/G G/A But would that person hear the angels Bb/C C/D D/E When they’re sometimes singing in my head? D7/E (4 BARS) They say it isn’t over till it’s over But I’ve seen so very many things now ending When I step back I get a view from nowhere Keep sinking when I should just be ascending I know outside the sun is shining, But I’m locked in and I’m without the keys I do believe The last thing I remember as they tied me to the bed The chorus I hear from the angels When they’re sometimes singing in my head D7/E (4 BARS); D#7/F (8 BARS) You don’t know where you’re going till you get there Still I wonder where the road I walk is leading My friends who come to see me, I’m glad they’re here But they can’t know what I’m feeling The things I’ve seen, I do believe It’s worth it all to glimpse the holy flame I’m not insane The doctor says the pills he holds will kill the demons dead But would I then still hear the angels When they’re sometimes singing in my head?

SOMETHING SMELLS FUNNY IN HERE Things look pretty shifty, things look pretty strange Things look like things are gonna have to change Hard to tell, just what to believe Can't trust what you hear, and you can't trust what you see Don't bet your money on the next sure thing Don't fall for someone who wants to be your king Lie long and loud enough outside the voting booth Might be some jokers who think that it's the truth Something smells funny in here Something smells funny Something smells funny in here Something smells funny Watch out for the Internet, and for the Party Line Watch out for friend's opinions, in fact watch out for mine That smiling face that you see on your TV Might not have the best intentions, for you, yeah, or for me Something smells funny in here Something smells funny Something smells funny in here Something smells funny

Another Fool 04:36
ANOTHER FOOL He says, “Love is a lie of nature, sent here to wreck your mind A genetic time bomb, it sets you up and then it leaves you blind” He’s talking like he’s so immune, like he’s already seen it all But I’m thinking that pretty soon another fool is gonna have to fall He says, “Yeah, it’s just a fact of science, man, all the proof is strong Just a chemical stimulus, and it doesn’t last all that long” He likes to think he’s so in tune that he’ll never ever hear the call But I’m thinking that pretty soon another fool is gonna have to fall Gonna have to fall, gonna have to fall Gonna have to fall, gonna have to fall You can hide in your own cathedral, you can lock the doors of the keep, And you can bury yourself in your guitar – Love it knows your scent and sound And it’s gonna track you down, Doesn’t matter who or where you are In a secret room that he never goes, there’s her picture there There’s a secret part of himself, whispers out that it’s still not fair Still, time’s gonna heal his wounds, and it’s gonna break down his walls And I’m thinking that pretty soon another fool is gonna have to fall Gonna have to fall, gonna have to fall Gonna have to fall, gonna have to fall

STOPS BEFORE IT STARTS "Is this seat taken?" At the small Parisian bar I thought that it was starting, and it sounded good so far Your brown eyes were shining as the band began to play We had to do the Cha-Cha before the evening slipped away And as we kept on dancing, I was sure you were the one Until the stroke of midnight, when you suddenly were gone You girl, where did you come from on that night You left the dance floor holding my poor heart I lost the chance for the magic and the light A sad affair that stops before it starts I looked and looked, but you were simply not around I don't think I imagined our connection so profound Then my eyes were captured by the picture on the wall And though it seemed so crazy, I could understand it all Those brown eyes were shining, shining back at me Back from when they painted you in 1703 You girl, where did you come from on that night You left the dance floor holding my poor heart I lost the chance for the magic and the light A sad affair that stops before it starts

SHOOTING STARS Up in the hills in midnight Michigan Watching as the meteors cut the air They start to burn up when they hit this planets’ sky I can’t help thinking now how they seem like you and I We flew in on fire in our Technicolor past Even then we knew that ride was never gonna last Your accelerated fall was sure something to see You were always faster then than I could ever be You were always so much more than me I’m tired of fightin’, I’m tired of cryin’, I’m tired of bitin’ on this cold iron I know up in the sky another eye looks down on me And I’m afraid of what that eye might see The shooting stars are falling fast and free When it all came down we were still young in a young world Never thought I’d get this old at all Here in the cold autumn with the strange celestial glow I wonder if I missed the place that I was supposed to go How will I ever know I’m tired of fightin’, I’m tired of cryin’, I’m tired of bitin’ on this cold iron I know up in the sky another eye looks down on me And I’m afraid of what that eye might see The shooting stars are falling fast and free I haven’t always been the man I thought that I should be Wonder if it matters anyway When I finally flame out and my soul turns into smoke I might get to see you and to share that final toke And appreciate the joke I’m tired of fightin’, I’m tired of cryin’, I’m tired of bitin’ on this cold iron I know up in the sky another eye looks down on me

UNBEF&%KINGLIEVABLE I sometimes think the ship of state is just the ship of fools; I feel myself out on the edge, and wonder if I’ve lost the bet But then my feet are on the ground, when I get out and walk around; and see the sun and see the sky, I know that things will be alright I look into my lover’s eyes and I don’t want to make her cry; but things get twisted on the way, and nothing seems to be OK But when we’re sitting by the stream, that blows away like some bad dream; we both can feel a greater plan, she reaches out to touch my hand You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me My tiny brain is so insane sometimes I can’t perceive You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me There’s times when this gets all too much, I feel I’m slipping out of touch; the load I bear is far too great, I could get crushed by all that weight Then I look at the evening sky and there’s a billion tiny lights; I know my view is all too small, I open up to see it all You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me Take everything I know and let the patterns all unweave You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me I raise my head and open my eyes and finally really see You’re Unbef&%kinglievable to me

WHERE THE RIVER MEETS THE SEA Well, you know you always talk of transformation And you know that I’m not sure I wanna change As we sit here by the water like so many times before On so very many magic nights and days But you told me of a country, that you’d seen it in your dreams And you said that it’s the place we’ve got to go I wasn’t all that sure about it, but I’ve started to believe ‘Cause I had that dream now last night too, you know Well I used to be so angry, I’m not angry any more And I used to be so frightened, but I had to let that go Take my hand now darling, in the sunset’s fading light There isn’t any place I’d rather be If we’re leaving here this evening, we can sail this ship all night Till we find out where the river meets the sea Yeah, the way’s not always easy, and the river could get rough And you never know just what’s around the bend But the journey will be worth it, and the ride won’t be so tough If I make it through with you there at the end Well I used to be so angry, I’m not angry any more And I used to be so frightened, but I had to let that go Take my hand now darling, in the sunset’s fading light There isn’t any place I’d rather be If we’re leaving here this evening, we can sail this ship all night Till we find out where the river meets the sea

about

This new album is my 7th, and is the 2nd of a series that will hopefully be released quarterly for a while. Why am I doing this? Largely because I'm writing a lot, because I still have an enormous amount of songs waiting in my studio, and also because time is really fucking fleeting, as has been demonstrated to me quite a lot recently. I think the latter idea is a theme that runs through this collection, although there are lots of places where it veers wildly from that into the realms of madness, love, and goofy fun. I hope you like it, and I'd be please to hear what you think of it! Contact me here, or at my label website www.reptilehouserecords.com

about

Beowulf Kingsley Grass Lake Charter Township, Michigan

Todd was here before. Perhaps you recognize him from back then. He looked different then, though. If you think he owes you any money, he was probably some other guy. Those other guys are gone now. We think they may be in Guam, or possibly Kansas.
